Learn to See Like an Artist
Every artist starts by learning how to see the world a little differently. Foundations of Art teaches students to look at the things around them with an artist’s eye, training their eyes and minds to understand what they see and turn those observations into art.
Students will explore the building blocks of art—including value, shape, form, proportion, perspective, texture, light and shadow, and color—and discover how these elements come together to make drawings feel realistic and three-dimensional. Through hands-on projects using objects, still lifes, and photographs, students learn to look closely, break what they see into simple visual components, and confidently bring their observations onto paper.
-
Shape & Form — Understand how simple shapes come together to create objects and give them dimension.
Value — Learn how light and dark work together to create depth and realism.
Light & Shadow — Discover how light interacts with objects and brings form to life.
Perspective — Learn how to create depth and make objects and spaces feel three-dimensional.
Proportion — Understand the relationships between different parts of an object or composition.
Texture — Explore how different surfaces can be observed and represented realistically.
Color — Learn the fundamentals of the color wheel and how colors work together.
Observation — Train your eyes to notice details and relationships you may have overlooked.
Artistic Thinking — Develop the ability to analyze what you see and approach artwork with an artist's mind.
